Tesco API: Warum Händler Entwickler-Schnittstellen brauchen

Tesco, der weltgrößte Online-Supermarkt, hat heute in London einen großen Open Innovation Tag rund um seine neue API-Schnittstelle für Lebensmittel (via).

Schon im Vorfeld gab es von Tesco eines der besten Plädoyers für eine Shopping API ever. Denn abgesehen von Amazon und Ebay ist die Zahl der Online-Händler mit Programmierschnittstellen immer noch recht überschaubar.

Viele Händler sträuben sich gegen offene Schnittstellen, weil sie fürchten, die Kontrolle über ihre Daten zu verlieren, wohl aber auch, weil sie überzeugt sind, selber am allerbesten zu wissen, wie ihre Kunden online shoppen wollen.

Ganz anders Tesco:

"The thing is, shopping for groceries online is different to other forms of e-commerce. It's not about you buying a single book, or a CD online - perhaps two or three items which you may well want to research first.

With grocery shopping it’s about buying 40... 50... 60...  different items - and doing it quickly because quite frankly you can’t get that excited about grocery shopping.

Our customers tell us that to differentiate ourselves we must be proactive, we must inspire them and we must make grocery shopping easier and faster.

Perhaps this new immersive experience needs to be a great mobile phone application... or perhaps a 3D virtual store... or shopping through the TV set-top box... or a third party recipe site where ingredients can be added straight to your basket...

I’ll stop there because I know 70 different exciting (some ‘blue-sky’) ways of shopping.

Das Thema offene Schnittstellen im E-Commerce finde ich extrem spannend. Wenn dann noch der Brückenschlag zum Cloud Computing (SaaS, PaaS, etc.) erfolgt, wird es richtig interessant.
